What is IMIS?

The project involves faculty and students from the Departments of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and it has the goal of developing a research and educational infrastructure in information technology within the two departments. Research activities include Wireless Communications, Network Security and Algorithms, Distributed Systems, Signal and Image Processing, Automatic Speech Recognition, Evaluation of Various Speech Sensors, Artificial Intelligence, and Pattern Recognition.

Goals:
  • Development of an infrastructure for intelligent mobile information systems (IMIS) involving various types of wireless networks to provide experimental tools for graduate student research as well as for undergraduate student projects.

  • Development of an aggressive mentoring program oriented toward encouraging African-Americans students to continue to graduate school as a part of this infrastructure

Participating Departments:

What is Communications and Signal Processing?

- Communications:

In the most fundamental sense, communication involves implicitly the transmission of information from one point to another through various kinds of channel media such as coaxial cable, wire, air, under water, etc. The information includes voice, music, picture, document, video, sensor signals, etc. Radio, TV, telephone, Cell phone, fax, email, satellite communications are the examples for the various kind of communications.

- Signal Processing:

Signal processing includes:
  • signal analysis to understand or interpret the physical phenomenon,
  • enhancement of the signal quality for the signal contaminated by noise, interference and undesired signals,
  • extracting information,
  • manipulating signals.
Signal processing can be applied to many area such as speech understanding, image and video processing and recording, audio sound systems, genomic data analysis, etc.
