Civil, Architectural, Agricultural and Environmental Engineering SUMMER PROGRAMS
  ENGINEER STARTERS PROGRAM
The Engineer Starters Program ESP serves as an avenue to target specifically those underrepresented in the Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology fields and provide them with tools necessary for success in today’s highly technical world. It is a two-week program, June 13 ?June 24, 2005, meeting Monday through Friday. ESP is a non-resident program. It is geared to identify middle school and high school students with interests, aptitudes, and demonstrated ability in science and math and to provide them with career awareness, academic training, and motivation in all disciplines of engineering early in their careers. Activities include Mathematics, Science and Career Exploration. Participants also encounter experiences in Computer Applications, Computer Drafting, Nanotechnology, and Project Presentations. The Engineer Starters Program operates jointly with the Para-Researcher Program (PRP) and the Energy Engineer Starters Program (EESP).
ESP Jr. is new for 2005. It is a one-week program, June 13, 2005 for those a little younger with an interest and aptitude towards engineering.

  PARA-RESEARCHER PROGRAM
The Para-Researcher Program (PRP) program is designed for high school students, rising 9th through 12 graders. The Institute for Human Machine Systems, with various external-funding sources, sponsors the PRP. This Institute is housed in the Department of Civil, Architectural, Agricultural and Environmental Engineering (ISE). The program aim is to inspire youth by introducing them to the exciting facets of Civil, Architectural, Agricultural and Environmental Engineering while emphasizing a major component (Human Factors/Ergonomics Engineering). PRP offers scaled-down presentational material so its participants can understand it better and relate the Civil, Architectural, Agricultural and Environmental Engineering concepts to real life situations. This outreach component features four segments: Human Factors/Ergonomics Engineering and the Design Competition; Lower Level Supply Chain Management; Web Page Design; and Group Dynamics. PRP operates jointly with ESP, June 13 ?June 24, 2005, Monday through Friday.

  ENERGY ENGINEER STARTERS PROGRAM
The Center for Energy Research and Technology (CERT) within the College of Engineering, Architectural Engineering sponsors the Energy Engineers Starters Program (EESP), on a grant funded by the State Energy Office, NC Department of Administration. It is designed to provide instruction, career awareness and motivation activities for rising middle and high school students. The purpose of the program was to familiarize students with building design concepts related to energy efficiency. The program features basic architectural concepts: building uses and requirements, programming, scale drawings, elevations, models; and energy concepts: light, solar radiation, light spectrum, heat content, heat-conduction, convection, infiltration. The focus is on the very timely subject of wise energy use within the “built environment? PRP operates jointly with ESP, June 13 ?June 24, 2005, Monday through Friday.

THE MINORITY YOUNG SCHOLAR RESEARCHER PROGRAM IN HUMAN FACTORS: ARL PARTNERSHIP IN EDUCATION AND RESEARCH (PIER)
The major aim of the Minority Young Scholar Researcher Program is to provide laboratory outreach information services to minority students who have interests in pursuing careers in engineering. Since the target group constitutes a higher percentage of the underrepresented population in engineering sciences, North Carolina A&T State University (NC A&T) has established and is funding a Para-Researcher Program (PRP) to motivate, encourage and advise students in grades 9-10 in choosing careers in engineering, especially the Human Factors area. Our initiative called Partnership In Education and Research (PIER) enhances the existing Educational Partnership Agreement between the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and NC A&T. This program exposes minority youths in grades 11-12 to the human factors engineering career field and future employment opportunities. Additional, students conduct research projects, and submit a final report to the Human Research and Engineering Directorate of ARL. The tentative date for the 2005 PIER is June 20, 2005 through July 29, 2005.
